When the picture was still at Paramount, Jon Favreau was\u00a0slated to direct. He expressed enthusiasm for the job, but left for <em>Iron Man<\/em> after Paramount decided to concentrate on Abrams&#8217; <em>Star Trek<\/em>. Disney had\u00a0once held the rights to the property and regained\u00a0them at that point. The studio\u00a0brought on Andrew Stanton, fresh from success as the director of <em>Finding Nemo<\/em> and <em>WALL-E<\/em>. Stanton <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aintitcool.com\/node\/39879\">has stated<\/a> several times since then\u00a0that he is a life-long fan of\u00a0ERB&#8217;s Barsoom series.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9689\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/lynncollins-dejah.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9689\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9689\" title=\"lynncollins-dejah\" src=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/lynncollins-dejah.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/lynncollins-dejah.jpg 400w, http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/lynncollins-dejah-150x112.jpg 150w, http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/lynncollins-dejah-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lynn Collins<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A weak link in the production could be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0028764\/\">Mark Andrews<\/a>, the primary screenwriter (along with Stanton). His resume is a bit thin, though\u00a0most of his work <em>has<\/em> been\u00a0in the sci-fi\/fantasy ballpark. Andrews&#8217; resume does\u00a0appear refreshingly free of utter crap, which can&#8217;t be said for the \u00a0Doppenheimer boys on the Conan film project.\u00a0Back in April, it was\u00a0confirmed that Michael Chabon (an ERB and REH fan) has been hired\u00a0as a script doctor. Chabon is on record as stating that the script was &#8220;strong&#8221; to begin with.<\/p>\n<p>The cast\u00a0boasts some\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambienceofmedia.com\/2009\/08\/25\/morton-west-and-walker-join-john-carter-of-mars\/\">respectable talent<\/a>. Willem Dafoe will portray Tars Tarkas. Dominic West and Polly Walker are also confirmed. However, two relative unknowns have been cast\u00a0for the leads. Taylor Kitsch, primarily <a href=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/TaylorKitsch.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9690\" title=\"SGG-077232\" src=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/TaylorKitsch.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/TaylorKitsch.jpg 414w, http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/TaylorKitsch-103x150.jpg 103w, http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/TaylorKitsch-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><\/a>known for his role as Gambit in the recent <em>Wolverine<\/em> movie, will portray John Carter. Lynn Collins, who also appeared in <em>Wolverine<\/em>,\u00a0is cast as Dejah Thoris.<\/p>\n<p>Kitsch is going to have to convince me. He\u00a0definitely does not look like the John Carter I&#8217;ve always envisioned. However, from some reports it appears that he is taking this role very seriously. As for Ms. Collins, she certainly looks the part. Nobody knew who Carrie Fisher was in 1976, either.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/saunders-mars.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9687 aligncenter\" title=\"saunders-mars\" src=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/saunders-mars.jpg\" alt=\"Saunders' concept art\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/saunders-mars.jpg 400w, http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/saunders-mars-150x63.jpg 150w, http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/saunders-mars-300x127.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We seem to be on\u00a0firm ground as far as production design is concerned.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rafael_Kayanan\">Rafael Kayanan<\/a> (whose Barsoomian art heads this post)\u00a0was attached to the project early on. <a href=\"http:\/\/philsaunders.blogspot.com\/search?q=mars\">Recent glimpses<\/a> from\u00a0concept artist Phil Saunders look quite encouraging.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/saunders-warhoons.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9688 aligncenter\" title=\"saunders-warhoons\" src=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/saunders-warhoons.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/saunders-warhoons.jpg 400w, http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/saunders-warhoons-150x60.jpg 150w, http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/saunders-warhoons-300x120.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All in all, I&#8217;m guardedly optimistic about this film. Everyone from the studio on down seems to be taking the project seriously. Judging from the cast list so far, it appears that the movie&#8217;s plot\u00a0will strongly resemble the novel it&#8217;s based on.
