Andy Serkis, the actor whose voice and mannerisms\u00a0brought to life\u00a0the character of Gollum in Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of Lord of the Rings<\/em>, has now taken on another unsavory character sprung from the well of imagination that was the Inklings<\/a>. This time, Serkis is trying his hand at Screwtape, the epistolary demon from C.S. Lewis’ classic, The Screwtape Letters<\/a><\/em> (which book was dedicated to JRRT).<\/p>\n As reported on the Oxford Inklings<\/em> blog<\/a>, Serkis is part of the cast for\u00a0an audio dramatization of Lewis’ short novel being produced by Focus on the Family\u00a0Radio Theatre (Lewis’ step-son, Douglas Gresham, is also involved).\u00a0Check out the behind-the-scenes clip and judge for yourself whether Serkis pulls\u00a0off one of the most memorable fiends in all of literature.<\/p>\n From what I can\u00a0discern regarding Serkis’\u00a0rendition of Screwtape, he’s done\u00a0a fine job,\u00a0quite possibly surpassing the previous\u00a0performances of\u00a0Max McLean,\u00a0John Cleese\u00a0and Joss Ackland. To be honest, while I thought that Serkis did an excellent job portraying Gollum (or, at least, the Gollum he was given), I’ve\u00a0always preferred Brother Theodore’s <\/a>performance in\u00a0the Rankin\/Bass production of The Hobbit<\/em><\/a>.
