{"id":4,"date":"2005-08-24T20:25:07","date_gmt":"2005-08-25T03:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/?p=4"},"modified":"2005-09-01T21:22:11","modified_gmt":"2005-09-02T04:22:11","slug":"sci-fi-part-deux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/sci-fi-part-deux\/","title":{"rendered":"Sci-Fi Part Deux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Flipping through the December 2004 issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dealtime.com\/xPC-Sci_Fi_Entertainment\"><em>SCI-FI<\/em>: The Official Magazine of the Sci-Fi Channel<\/a>, I was interested to see a &quot;special fantasy section&quot; featured prominently. Knowing that Howard would be mentioned and ruefully remembering the last time the folks at <em>SCI-FI<\/em> commented on Howard (John Clute&#8217;s now-infamous appraisal in his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scifi.com\/sfw\/issue217\/excess.html\">review<\/a> of the Gollancz <em>Conan Chronicles<\/em>), I skimmed through to see if their treatment of Howard had improved any in the ensuing two years. Alas, it has not. Read what I found, along with my somewhat oversensitive but nonetheless appropriate response, halfway down this page of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scifi.com\/sfw\/issue389\/letters.html\">letters section<\/a> of the <em>SCI-FI<\/em> Weekly website.<\/p>\n<p>While the quip which spurred me into action was, in and of itself, not worth complaining about overmuch, it does highlight the continued pattern of Howard&#8217;s shoddy treatment at the hands of genre journalists, treatment that would never be tolerated if directed at <em>SCI-FI<\/em> &#8216;s sacred cows. We would never see, for instance, a joke about Isaac Asimov&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asimovonline.com\/asimov_FAQ.html#non-literary2\">death by AIDS<\/a>, or about James Doohan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/alzheimers.about.com\/od\/diagnosisissues\/a\/Scotty.htm\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>. Of course we wouldn&#8217;t, that would be tasteless and offensive. So we should expect the same basic level of decency whenever Robert E.
