It&#8217;s got sorcery, baby!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/scottoden.blogspot.com\/\">Scott Oden<\/a>, announcing the completion of his third novel <em>The Lion of Cairo<\/em>: 126,000 words, none of them wussified. Although his career is still in what a Flashmaniac might call &#8220;the earlies,&#8221; Scott has already joined Karl Edward Wagner and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlessaunderswriter.com\/\">Charles R. Saunders<\/a> on the short list of <em>Howardists&#8217; Favorite Authors Other Than REH Himself<\/em>, and at his blog he reports &#8220;IMO, it&#8217;s the best thing I&#8217;ve ever written, as full of intrigue as it is full of ass-whuppery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Everything the author has let slip about his new book indicates that it will operate on a level deserving  of thunder-sowing illustrations, although we&#8217;ll all have to be our own Krenkels at this late date:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2008\/09\/krenkel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1722\" title=\"Sowers\" src=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2008\/09\/krenkel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/krenkel.jpg 750w, http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/krenkel-300x267.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And speaking of intriguing, among the side projects in the Oden future before he comes to grips with <em>The Damascene Blade<\/em>, a sequel to <em>Lion<\/em>, are &#8220;an illustrated history of Orcs and an encyclopedia of the Hyborian Age.&#8221; The latter endeavor just can&#8217;t get here fast enough for those of us who&#8217;ve been grimacing for thirty years at the errors (some of them de Camp-derived) committed by Julian May-as-Lee Falconer:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2008\/09\/n16237.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1718\" title=\"Gazeteer\" src=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2008\/09\/n16237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/n16237.jpg 316w, http:\/\/leogrin.com\/CimmerianBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/n16237-191x300.jpg 191w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 316px) 100vw, 316px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scott, who posts frequently and learnedly at Conan.com, is as qualified a Hyboriophile for the job as there&#8217;s been since Robert Yaple added value to those magical startup issues of <em>The Savage Sword of Conan<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Unless you&#8217;re commited to reading the <em>Conan the Barbarian<\/em> novelization out loud to your action figures to the exclusion of all else, while we await word of a release date for <em>Lion<\/em> why not catch up with the first two Odens, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Men_of_Bronze\"><em>Men of Bronze<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Memnon-Scott-Oden\/dp\/1932815392\/ref=pd_sim_b_1\/002-5299590-5576005\"><em>Memnon<\/em><\/a>? Having already paid dues enough for one lifetime, let&#8217;s hope he and his fellow Gulf Coasters sail through Gustav. As of Sunday night Charles was okay and opining that &#8220;Dennis Weaver was a bit of a whiny bitch&#8221; in Spielberg&#8217;s <em>Duel<\/em>; we can all agree that hurricanes are best experienced by way of Robert E.
